P0A90 Possible Symptoms

Check engine light illuminated (or service engine soon warning light)

P0A90 Meaning

The HV transaxle consists of a planetary reduction gear, MG1 and MG2.
A reduction gear uses the planetary gear to divide engine power according to driving demand during vehicle operation or charging of its internal HV battery.
MG2 provides assistance to engine output while increasing the vehicle’s driving force.

Additionally, MG2 performs regenerative braking by converting energy (which is consumed as heat during normal braking) into electrical energy and recovering it in the HV battery. Through regenerative braking and vehicle deceleration, MG2 generates high voltage electrical power that is used to charge the HV battery.

MG1 provides electrical energy, which is used to charge the HV battery or to drive MG2. It also has a continuous transmission function to control the transaxle by regulating the amount of electrical power generation, which effectively varies MG1 speed. Additionally, MG1 is used as a starter to start the engine.
The transmission input damper absorbs shocks that accompany the transmission of driving force from the engine.

P0A93 Possible Symptoms

Illuminated engine light (or service engine soon warning light)

P0A93 Meaning

The inverter converts high voltage DC current from the HV battery to AC current for MG1 and MG2. The inverter generates heat during the conversion process, and this heat can damage the inverter if no cooling system is available. Therefore, similar to MG1 and MG2, the inverter is cooled by a dedicated cooling system, which consists of an electric water pump, cooling fan, and radiator. This cooling system is independent of the engine cooling system.

P0A94 Possible Symptoms

Malfunction indicator lamp illuminated (or service engine soon warning light)

P0A94 Meaning

The boost converter contains an IPM (Intelligent Power Module), which includes an IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) and a reactor. The HV control ECU operates the IGBT, which controls the current in the reactor.

The boost converter increases the high voltage DC rated at 201.6 V to an approximate DC voltage of 500 V. The inverter converts the voltage that has been increased by the boost converter to alternating current, which is used to drive the MG1/MG2. When the MG1/MG2 operates as a generator, the approximately 500 V alternating current from the MG1/MG2 is converted to direct current by the inverter.
Then, the boost converter drops this voltage to a DC voltage rated at 201.6 V in order to charge the HV battery.

The HV control ECU uses a voltage sensor built into the boost converter to detect the high voltage (VL) before it is amplified. Additionally, it uses a voltage sensor built into the inverter to detect the high voltage (VH) after it is increased.
Based on the voltage before and after its increase, the HV control ECU boosts it to a target voltage by controlling the operation of the boost converter.
