Troy Lake, Imprisoned Diesel Tuner: Wyoming Seeks His Pardon from Trump

Imprisoned for disabling anti-pollution systems, diesel tuner Troy Lake, owner of Elite Diesel, receives significant political support. Over 40 representatives from the state of Wyoming are advocating for a presidential pardon from Donald Trump, challenging the legitimacy of his conviction.

A Federal Conviction Under Fire

Troy Lake pleaded guilty to conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act. The federal government accuses him of disabling emission control systems on “hundreds” of heavy-duty trucks across the country. His sentence amounts to 12 months and one day in prison, along with a $52,500 fine.

Massive Support from Wyoming Lawmakers

Chip Neiman, Speaker of the Wyoming House of Representatives, sent a letter to the U.S. Attorney General, co-signed by more than 40 of his colleagues. In it, he denounces an “unjust prosecution” by the Biden administration and a justice system “weaponized” for political purposes. The letter defends Lake’s actions, arguing that anti-pollution systems cause engine failures, fires, and exorbitant repair costs for truckers and small businesses.

A Case with Political Ramifications

Lake’s supporters point to the reversal of the EPA under the Trump era, where Administrator Lee Zeldin worked to undo emission regulations. They believe that Lake’s conviction was motivated by political considerations rather than justice, claiming that the judge intended to “make an example” of him.

A Widespread Practice in the Industry

The Lake case is not isolated. Many diesel tuners have faced heavy fines and criminal penalties for violating the Clean Air Act. Trump’s return to the White House was met with optimism by the industry, which hoped for a relaxation of regulations.
