The internal combustion process in the engine causes the emission of many harmful gases. Fortunately,
there is a device called a catalytic converter integrated into the exhaust system. The function of the catalytic converter is to convert these hazardous gases into less toxic gases. This way, they do not end up harming the environment as much or causing health problems for people. The catalytic converter also allows the engine to run more efficiently and achieve better fuel consumption for the vehicle. Therefore, it is certainly an important device to have in your exhaust system.
Many people do not realize that they need to clean their catalytic converter from time to time, otherwise it may become clogged. The last thing you would want is a clogged catalytic converter because it will weaken the engine’s performance and reduce your vehicle’s fuel economy. Even worse, toxic gases will be emitted into the open air. That is why it is important to clean your catalytic converter whenever it starts to get clogged with dirt.
You are probably wondering how to go about cleaning a catalytic converter. It is certainly not a process that many people talk about. Most people may choose to have it done for them by a professional automotive technician. However, if you are looking to save money and clean the catalytic converter yourself, there are a few important tips you need to know first.
1) Prepare for Cleaning
Do not just start the cleaning process without checking if your car is parked on a suitable surface. It should be a flat, hard, and well-lit surface. Once you have parked your car on such a surface, open your vehicle’s hood and properly position the prop rod to hold it in place.
2) Remove the Catalytic Converter
You need to remove the catalytic converter before you can clean it. This requires you to use a wrench on the bolts to loosen them and remove the converter. Make sure to keep the bolts in a secure area so you do not lose them. You will need these bolts at the end.
3) Check for Damage
If you are experiencing catalytic converter issues, you need to make sure the converter is not damaged. If it is just dirty, you will take care of it very soon. But if you notice damage to the converter, you need to replace it with a brand new one in the exhaust system. Do not just inspect the outside of the converter for possible damage. Shake it and see if it makes any strange noises. If it does, it is damaged.
4) Clean the Dirt
If the catalytic converter is not damaged, you are ready to clean it. Start from the front of the converter and wipe off the dirt and residue with a clean cloth. There may be debris stuck or accumulated in the converter, so you need to use a pressure washer to remove it. Wash the inside of the outlet pipes and inlet pipes. Hot water and a degreaser may be needed if the dirt is hard to remove.
5) Let the Converter Dry
Do not just put the catalytic converter back into the exhaust system after cleaning it. Wait for the catalytic converter to be 100% dry first. Once that is done, you can put the converter back in place. Secure the converter in place by reinstalling the bolts on it with the wrench.
