Magnus Östberg, Mercedes-Benz’s software chief, made a surprising statement: “data shows us that physical buttons are better”. The announcement marks a significant reversal in the German manufacturer’s equipment strategy.
The Return of Tactile Controls
According to confirmed information, Mercedes-Benz will indeed reintroduce physical buttons, knobs, and switches into their vehicle interiors. This decision follows customer feedback and usage data, which demonstrated the superiority of tactile controls for certain essential functions.
The reintroduction will first occur through a new steering wheel design, initially presented on the upcoming electric GLC. This approach was chosen because it represents the fastest way to reintegrate physical controls into the luxury manufacturer’s models.
