P1153 PONTIAC – HO2S Insufficient Switching, Bank 2 Sensor 1

Posted by

P1153 PONTIAC Possible Causes

  • Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S), Bank 2 Sensor 1
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) Bank 2 Sensor 1 harness is open or shorted
  • Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S), Bank 2, Sensor 1 circuit, poor electrical connection

How to Fix P1153 PONTIAC Code?

Start by checking the “possible causes” listed above. Visually inspect the corresponding wiring harness and connectors. Look for damaged components and check for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector pins.

When is the Code Detected?

A P1153 DTC is set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) determines that the HO2S has not switched enough times.

Possible Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light on (or Service Engine Soon warning light)

P1153 PONTIAC Meaning

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) activity for 100 seconds. During this monitoring period, the PCM counts the number of times the HO2S switches from rich to lean and lean to rich.
A lean to rich switch is determined when the HO2S voltage goes from less than 300 mV to more than 600 mV. A rich to lean switch is determined when the HO2S voltage goes from more than 600 mV to less than 300 mV.
