P0269 Cylinder 3 Contribution / Balance

Posted by

What Does This Mean?

P0269 is a generic powertrain diagnostic trouble code (DTC) applicable to vehicles equipped with OBD-II systems. It indicates a fuel contribution imbalance issue in cylinder number three.

Although it is a generic code, the exact causes and solutions can vary depending on the vehicle’s make and model. Therefore, it is recommended to consult technical service bulletins (TSBs) to check for manufacturer-recommended solutions.

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the power output of each cylinder by analyzing crankshaft acceleration during the combustion phase. If a cylinder delivers less power than the others, code P0269 is triggered.

Symptoms

Common symptoms associated with code P0269 include:

  • Illumination of the Check Engine light
  • Reduced power and acceleration
  • Rough idling
  • Decreased fuel economy

Possible Causes

Several factors can explain this malfunction in cylinder number three:

  • Faulty electrical connector on the fuel injector (corrosion, pushed-back pins)
  • Clogged or dirty fuel injector
  • Fuel injector failure

Diagnostic and Repair Procedure

1. Connector Inspection

  • Check the fuel injector’s electrical connector for any corrosion or damaged pins.
  • Correct any defects, apply dielectric grease to the terminals, and reconnect them.

2. Injector Operation Check

  • Start the engine.
  • Use a long screwdriver as a stethoscope: place the blade on the injector and the handle against your ear. A “clicking” sound indicates normal operation.
  • If no sound is heard, the injector may be faulty or not receiving voltage.

3. Voltage Test

  • Use a voltmeter to check the voltage of the injector’s red power wire.
  • Normal battery voltage should be present. If not, there may be a broken wire between the injector and the fuel pump relay.

4. Fuel Injector Cleaning

  • Purchase a fuel injector cleaning kit.
  • Remove the fuel pump fuse to relieve fuel pressure.
  • Connect the pressurized cleaner to the fuel rail and start the engine until it stalls.

5. Error Code Reset

  • Clear the P0269 code using an OBD-II scanner.
  • Start the engine and check if the problem persists.
  • If the symptom returns, replace the fuel injector.

By following these steps, you can effectively identify and correct the fuel contribution issue in cylinder number three.
