Ban on combustion engine cars in 2035: Mercedes CEO calls it “unachievable

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius stated that the planned ban on internal combustion engine car sales in Europe by 2035 is “simply unrealistic.” In an open letter to the European Commission President, he argued that the current timeline for reducing CO2 emissions needs to be “recalibrated.”

Källenius justified his position by pointing to a “lack of a holistic and pragmatic political plan.” He also cited a long list of factors in the current regulatory and commercial environment that, in his view, “do not provide the necessary conditions for a successful transition” to electric vehicles.
