P1194 – Malfunction of the 2-position throttle position sensor in the throttle actuator control system

Posted by

Possible Causes

The P1194 code may be triggered for the following reasons:

  • Faulty Electronic Throttle System (ETS) motor.
  • General ETS system malfunction.
  • ETS unit failure.
  • Open or shorted ETS system wiring harness.
  • Poor electrical connection in the ETS circuit.

How to Fix Code P1194?

  1. Visual Inspection:
    • Check the wiring harness and connectors associated with the ETS system.
    • Look for damage such as exposed wires, corroded connectors, or broken pins.
  2. Diagnose Key Components:
    • Test the ETS motor for failure.
    • Check the Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) and Throttle Position Sensor (TPS).
    • Ensure the Limp return valve is functioning correctly.
  3. Specific Procedures:
    • If a poor connection or short circuit is detected, repair or replace the affected wires and connectors.
    • If the ETS unit or a component like the ETS motor is faulty, replace the defective parts.

Possible Symptoms

  • Engine light on (or “Check Engine” warning light activated).
  • The engine may stall or operate in limp mode.

Meaning of Code P1194

The Electronic Throttle System (ETS) controls acceleration via electrical signals rather than a mechanical cable. It consists of several components:

  • ETS Unit: Coordinates signals and commands.
  • ETS Motor: Adjusts the throttle position.
  • APS and TPS Sensors: Monitor the accelerator and throttle positions.
  • Limp Return Valve: Located under the throttle body, it allows air to flow to prevent the engine from stalling if a problem is detected by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module).
