Error Code P1153: Problems and Solutions

Meaning of Code P1153

Code P1153 is related to the Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S), Bank 2 Sensor 1.

The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the heated oxygen sensor activity over a period of 100 seconds. During this time, it counts the number of times the sensor switches from a rich to a lean mixture and vice versa.

  • A switch from lean to rich occurs when the sensor voltage goes from less than 300 mV to more than 600 mV.
  • A switch from rich to lean occurs when the sensor voltage goes from more than 600 mV to less than 300 mV.

If the sensor does not respond correctly or the number of switches is insufficient, the PCM triggers code P1153.

Possible Symptoms

  • Check Engine light on (or “Service Engine Soon” warning light).
  • Excessive fuel consumption.
  • Possible misfires.
  • Poor engine performance.

Possible Causes

  • Faulty Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) (Bank 2, Sensor 1).
  • Open or shorted sensor wiring harness.
  • Poor electrical connection in the sensor circuit.

How to Fix Code P1153?

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and associated connectors.
  2. Check for damaged components (burned wires, melted insulation, etc.).
  3. Inspect the connectors for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded pins.
  4. Test the oxygen sensor voltage with a multimeter:
    • Check if the voltage oscillates between 0.1V and 0.9V when the engine is running.
    • If the voltage remains stuck, the sensor may be faulty.
  5. Replace the heated oxygen sensor if necessary.

If the problem persists after these checks, further diagnosis by a professional may be required.
