P1140 Possible Causes
- Faulty intake valve timing control solenoid valve, bank 1
- Intake valve timing control solenoid valve circuit open or shorted, bank 1
- Poor electrical connection in intake valve timing control solenoid valve circuit, bank 1
- Faulty crankshaft position sensor
- Faulty camshaft position sensor
How to Fix Code P1140?
Start by checking the “possible causes” listed above. Visually inspect the related wiring harness and connectors. Look for damaged components and check for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector pins.
Possible Symptoms
- Engine light on (or service engine soon warning light)
- Possible engine lack/loss of power
- Possible engine rough idle
P1140 Meaning
This mechanism hydraulically controls the cam phases continuously with the fixed operating angle of the intake valve.
The engine control module (ECM) receives signals such as crankshaft position, camshaft position, engine speed, and engine coolant temperature. Then, the ECM sends pulsed ON/OFF duty signals to the intake valve timing control solenoid valve based on the driving condition. This controls the intake valve closing/opening timing to increase engine torque in the low/mid speed range and output in the high speed range.
The intake valve timing control solenoid valve changes the oil amount and flow direction through the intake valve timing control unit or stops the oil flow. The longer pulse width advances the valve angle. The shorter pulse width retards the valve angle. When the ON and OFF pulse widths become equal, the solenoid valve stops the oil pressure flow to fix the intake valve angle at the control position.
