P1009 HONDA Possible Causes
- Engine oil level
- Dirty engine oil
- Check VTC filter for blockage
- Faulty VTC oil control solenoid or circuit
- Faulty VTC actuator
- Engine mechanical problems
How is P1009 HONDA Code Repaired?
Start by checking the “possible causes” listed above. Visually inspect the wiring harness and associated connectors. Check for damaged components and look for broken, bent, pushed out, or corroded connector pins.
What Does It Mean?
A tight timing chain or a damaged tensioner can also cause the P1009 code to trigger. Before replacing the timing chain or tensioner, check the engine oil level and condition. If necessary, replace the engine oil and filter with a factory-recommended oil weight.
Possible Symptoms
Engine light on (or service engine soon warning light)
P1009 HONDA Meaning
The Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) system controls the phase of the intake camshaft. It uses oil pressure to operate the VTC actuator so that valve timing is optimized based on driving conditions. The Engine Control Module (ECM) / Powertrain Control Module (PCM) monitors the phase control command and the actual camshaft timing using the Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor A. If an excessively advanced camshaft phase (compared to the commanded value) continues or when the camshaft phase is otherwise abnormal, a malfunction is detected and a DTC is recorded.
