Understanding How ECO Start/Stop Technology Works
The ECO Start/Stop system works to cut off the engine whenever your car is stopped for any duration.
This means that even if you simply stop at a traffic light, the engine will not run, significantly reducing fuel consumption. The system not only ensures that the engine stops when your car is stationary but also restarts the engine as soon as you press the accelerator pedal and continue on your way.
The specific mechanics of this fuel-saving and emission-reducing function vary slightly depending on the type of transmission you have. If you drive a manual transmission, the system works if your speed drops below 8 kilometers per hour (about 5 miles per hour) and you brake after putting your gear lever in neutral. This situation is known as coasting mode, and when you enter it, the engine automatically stops. Your engine will restart as soon as you press the clutch, without requiring any action on your part.
If you have an automatic transmission in your Mercedes-Benz, the engine does not stop automatically until you come to a complete stop. The engine restarts as soon as you press the accelerator, so you won’t even notice a difference while driving.
Impressive Fuel Savings Through the Use of This Technology
You will find similar systems offered by other luxury brands, but none of them can match the Mercedes-Benz ECO Start/Stop function. This is because the Mercedes-Benz system is better integrated and capable of responding more quickly at startup. This in turn results in quieter operation while driving as well as longer periods when the engine is shut off.
It is these engine shutdown phases that significantly improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions. Depending on where and how you drive, you can save up to 9% in fuel compared to driving a vehicle without ECO Start/Stop. Fuel savings are closer to this high figure when driving in urban areas, especially in traffic jams or areas with many traffic lights.
It is easy to know when the ECO Start/Stop system is active thanks to the ECO indicator located in the instrument cluster. A light will illuminate above the word “ECO” when your system is actively saving fuel and the vehicle is stopped.
Which Mercedes-Benz Models Come with the ECO Start/Stop Function?
To demonstrate its commitment to energy efficiency and environmental protection, Mercedes-Benz offers the ECO Start/Stop function in at least one model in almost every class. The only exceptions are the SL and SLK classes due to their high performance. If you wish to drive a model from another Mercedes-Benz class, you will be able to find a vehicle equipped with this eco-friendly function.
